What is a Rapid PCR Test?

The Thermo Fisher/Mesa Biotech Accula SARS-CoV-2 test platform is a Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction(RT-PCR) test which is a type of a Nucleic Acid Amplification Test(NAAT), considered the gold standard in COVID testing. It is performed using only a nasal swab which is minimally invasive yet proven to be extremely accurate and reliable. PCR tests are highly sensitive which means that they are able to detect very small amounts of virus. These are the tests most commonly used in hospitals to detect SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID. Because these tests are so sensitive, they are often the test of choice for situations in which clearance is required, either for travel, work, or school. While many PCR tests can take several days to return, the Accula PCR test available at WorkPartners is completed in less than one hour.

Unfortunately, most insurance companies no longer cover COVID testing for the purpose of travel. We still encourage you to submit your receipt to your health insurance company claims department due to the variability in insurance policies. We do accept credit card payments.

It is the patient’s responsibility to verify that the test result and timing of the result will be accepted for your travel destination prior to purchase. For travel to the State of Hawaii, currently only contracted partners can provide results. As WorkPartners is not contracted with the State of Hawaii, unfortunately, our tests are not currently accepted for travel to Hawaii.

WorkPartners also has available the following tests:

This is a blood test that detects whether you have antibodies against the virus that causes COVID. It is used to detect evidence of immunity, but does not tell you if you are actively infected with the virus.

Appointments may be rescheduled prior to the appointment time with no additional fee. Please refer to your email or text for rescheduling options.

If you miss your appointment without notifying us in advance, we will gladly reschedule your appointment one time as a courtesy.  A second missed appointment will incur a $35 cancellation fee per test.

What is a PCR Test?

This test is a Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction(RT-PCR) test which is a type of a Nucleic Acid Amplification Test(NAAT), considered the gold standard in COVID testing. It is used to to detect if you are currently infected by the virus.

This “Standard” PCR test is sent to a certified laboratory to be analyzed by Certified Laboratory Specialists and will take 24-48 hours to return a result.

What is an Antigen Test?

An antigen test is a test that detects the presence of a specific protein on the surface of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Like the PCR test, it is also used to detect if you are currently infected by the virus. Compared to a PCR test, they are generally more readily available, quicker, and less expensive. While they are very specific(meaning that if the result is positive it very likely means you actually do have the virus), it is not as sensitive as the PCR(which means that when the virus levels are low, it can be more likely to miss the infection than a PCR test). These are widely used as a quick screen for evidence of infection.

What is an Antigen Test?

An antigen test is a test that detects the presence of a specific protein on the surface of a virus. This triple test detects not only proteins on the SARS-CoV-2 virus, but also on Influenza A and Influenza B. With a single nasal swab, this test will provide information about whether or not you have COVID-19, Flu A or Flu B. Like the PCR test, it is also used to detect if you are currently infected by the virus. Compared to a PCR test, they are generally more readily available, quicker, and less expensive. These are widely used as a quick screen for evidence of infection.

What is an Antibody Test?

Antibody tests(also called serology tests) are used to tell if you have PREVIOUSLY been infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This indicates whether you might have immunity, or protection against the virus that causes COVID-19. This test is NOT used to tell if you are actively infected or are capable of transmitting the infection to others. This test is also not a swab, but requires a blood draw from your arm.
